State In The Real – Penn State Music Scene

DJ Master Artist Profile: DJ Sonny

With Red Bull DJ Master: EDMC Edition less than a week away, we decided to bring you an artist profile of each of our competing DJs. This way, you can get inside their head a little bit before the big showdown.

First up: DJ Sonny

SITR: How’d you get involved with DJing, or music in general?

DJ Sonny: I started listening to EDM about 2 years ago and fell in love with it. I’ve always followed music blogs religiously.

I started djing about 8 months ago. I’ve always been the kid at parties that changes the music off some other kids ipod. So i figured why not be a dj, so i can play the songs i love and share it with the world.

SITR: Who do you think is the most iconic DJ in the music scene right now? Who do you find to be the most inspirational?

DJ Sonny: EDM is blowing up exponentially right now and there are many people that have a huge influence on this. Pete Tong is definitely one of them with his BBC Essential mix. It’s nice to see a producer that you’ve been following finally get that next big step by having an essential mix. SHM also having a huge impact right now with their “one last tour” and their solo careers. All 3 of their record labels have such a huge impact on the dance music scene. Also all these huge festivals in America (EDC, UMF, ID, etc…) have had an amazing impact on the rise of edm in the US.
Thomas Gold is probably my favorite “DJ” at the moment and is very inspirational in how he came to be. He’s been around for a while and with being picked up by Axtone he’s blown up. I think he’s not only a phenomenal producer but a dj/live performer as well. His mixes are unlike anyone elses and are always unpredictable. People like him are keeping edm fresh and spontaneous.

SITR: What is your preferred genre to spin?

DJ Sonny: DJ Sonny: I prefer to spin progressive/electro and some tech house.
I am working on some bootlegs and edits that I’m going to incorporate in my set that I feel will definitely get the crowd going. In terms of original music I don’t have any at the moment. I do hope to begin producing in the near future though (as soon as school stops taking over my life!)

SITR: What is your favorite type of show to play? Club? House Party?

DJ Sonny: I’d say i enjoy house parties the most because of the energy level that people bring and its more intimate. I always feel like im playing for a bunch of my close friends

SITR:What do you foresee for the future of EDM?

DJ Sonny: As for the future of EDM i think it will keep on getting bigger. I see more and more people getting into it every day, and it will become our generations music revolution.

And there you have it! Make sure you come out to hear DJ Sonny spin live at Red Bull DJ Master this Thursday, November 29th at Indigo!
