Canadian Artist Spotlight: Bahamas

First of all, it’s been a crazy couple of weeks so I apologize for not bestowing a new Canadian artist upon you sooner. Last time we talked about City and Colour, which you can check out here if you haven’t already. Oh, and if you don’t know what the Canadian Artist Spotlight is all about, you can also read up on my inspiration behind the new series on that page.

It’s a beautiful Friday here at Penn State and it inspired me to spotlight this next musician. He is one of my go-to artists when it comes to listening to music on a warm, sunny day. Afie Jurvanen is a Finnish-Canadian singer-songwriter who performs under the stage name, Bahamas. Jurvanen was born in Toronto, but raised in Barrie, Ontario which is basically directly north of his birth city (if you seriously don’t know where Toronto is then shame on you). Bahamas is signed to Brushfire Records alongside artists such as Matt Costa and Zee Avi (sidenote: both are super talented and definitely worth checking out). The label is headed by Jack Johnson which means if he sees something in Bahamas, then you probably will too. Alfie Jurvanen spent time playing music for other artists like Feist and The Stills before going solo. Under the name Bahamas, he released two albums, Pink Strat (2009) and Barchords (2012). I’m going to focus primarily on the latter just because it’s more recent and my favorite. Barchords gives off this west coast, laid back mood that makes you want to lay on the beach and kick back while you enjoy the view. iTunes classifies Bahamas under the pop genre, but I refuse to see him as a pop artist; if anything, I’d categorize his music as folk. However, Jurvanen does include a bit of everything throughout his album like blues and country. Jurvanen’s voice is soulful as he croons bittersweet lyrics accompanied by lofty acoustics. He consistently delivers intense tracks that are guitar-centric and have tender vocals, and I can’t get enough. He also gets bonus points for being a self-taught guitarist. Want to do some deep soul searching? Bahamas can provide some melancholy, haunting tracks for that. Spending the day at the beach? He can give you twangy beach tunes, too. All I can say is that I’m really glad that Afie Jurvanen decided to go solo and release some music of his own.

Kick back and enjoy some of my favorite tracks from Bahamas’ Barchords album! I also highly recommend listening to “I Got You Babe” which isn’t shown below because it’s not on SoundCloud (insert sad face here).

Canadian Artist Spotlight: City and Colour

Since starting school here at Penn State, it has come to my attention that many are unaware of just how many ridiculously talented musicians Canada has produced. Before you ask, the answer is yes, there are other successful Canadian musicians besides Justin Bieber and Celine Dion. And no, I am not going to apologize for the Biebs because whether you love him or hate him, you have to admit he’s talented. Now, since coming to this realization, I have decided to start a new segment where I will introduce one of my fellow Canadians at least once a week. These artists may be wildly successful or completely unknown; maybe I’ll surprise you by featuring one of your favorite artists that just so happens to be Canadian and you didn’t even know it. In these features, I’ll provide you with some background information on the musician/band, and showcase a few of my favorite tracks. I hope you come to enjoy my Canadian Artist Spotlight sessions and perhaps learn a little more about your northern neighbors.

I will start you all off with an easy, relatively popular musician before taking you into the depths of totally unknown indie artists. My inaugural artist is Dallas Green, more popularly known as City and Colour. You may know him from the post-hardcore band called Alexisonfire, where he was a vocalist, guitarist, and pianist. But seriously, if you don’t know City and Colour…where have you been? The alias City and Colour was inspired by Green’s own name: Dallas, a city in Texas, and Green, a colour. Genius, right? The musician was born in 1980 in the city of St. Catherines, Ontario. For those of you who don’t know your Canadian geography, that’s by Niagara Falls and is northwest of Buffalo, NY. I’d classify City and Colour as folk rock, acoustic rock, or just music that’s so beautiful you want to cry. When his debut album Sometimes was released in 2005, I was pleasantly surprised by what I found. I definitely did not expect an album full of soothing, beautiful, acoustic tracks which is exactly what he delivered. Green’s work under City and Colour is an extreme contrast to the intense, hardcore sounds of Alexisonfire. Since his debut album, Green has released two more entitled, Bring Me Your Love and Little Hell. Each and every album is full of melancholy acoustic tracks with lyrics full of heart. He has received much recognition for his music and has even won three Juno Awards (Canada’s very own Music Awards which is actually kind of a big deal for Canadian artists). These days, Dallas Green can be found playing shows on the European leg of his tour. Guess we won’t be seeing a new album for a little while, but I am definitely looking forward to what his next one will bring!

Below are a few of my favorite City and Colour tracks, one from each album. Be sure to check out the rest of his music if you like what you hear!

Beyoncé Returns With "Bow Down / I Been On"

I guess she never left, but that’s beside the point. Beyoncé released a 3:34 minute track on her SoundCloud yesterday entitled, “Bow Down / I Been On.” The track is said to be a snippet of two separate songs, but there’s no word on whether they’ll be featured on her next album. The first song,”Bow Down,” is apparently produced by Hit-Boy, the same producer who worked with Jay-Z and Kanye West on their track “Ni**as In Paris.” The second part, “I Been On,” was produced by Polow Da Don, Timbaland, and Planet VI. This teaser is mean, fierce, and raw (Surprising? I don’t think so). Looks like Beyoncé is finally taking our proclamations of love and worship to heart and has dutifully accepted the position of our queen. Whether you love it or hate it, Mrs. Carter is definitely showing everyone who’s boss with this track, and I will gladly bow down.
