Beyoncé Unveils World Tour

Looks like Queen Bey will be jetting off around the world, starting early 2013! Beyoncé did hint that there would be a major announcement post-Super Bowl, and she sure as hell did not disappoint. After her dazzling, stunning, flawless, perfect performance at last night’s Super Bowl XLVII, she unveiled “The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour,” which will begin in just a few months! The tour will start off in Europe on April 15th, where she will be performing 24 shows before returning to North America. Los Angeles gets the first show of the North American leg of the tour on June 28th, but it looks like Brooklyn is the real winner here. The diva will play her last concert of the newly announced tour on August 3rd at the Barclays Center. Beyoncé’s hubby, Jay-Z, played several shows at the Barclays Center in late 2012, so it really doesn’t come as a surprise that she’ll be finishing the tour on familiar ground. This is Beyoncé’s first tour since her “I AM…WORLD TOUR” in 2009. I hope Bey is playing a show near you, and if not, I hope you have the funds to get you to one of her concerts because it’s going to be GOOD.

Here’s a little promo video to give you a taste of what’s coming.

Tru Fam's Releases New Party Track Entitled "Rich Kids"

Identical twins, “Sha” and “Just-I,” started making their own music in 2007 under the name Tru Fam. Ever since then, the hip-hop/pop duo from New Jersey has been developing their sound and talents. Their newest single, “Rich Kids,” is one of those songs that you hear when watching a party montage video and I mean that in the best way possible. Call me crazy, but I’m slightly feeling a Kendrick Lamar vibe in the vocals of this track (and that is definitely a good thing as you Kendrick-aware people know). Most of us are probably unfamiliar with partying with the rich kids, but I think we can all relate to the line “guilty pleasures, get you to come out and play.” Either way, I think we can all find some appreciation for the rhymes featured in this new single. So, what do you all think of Tru Fam’s new single? Yay or nay?

Here’s the bio for Tru Fam if you want to know more about the twin rappers:

“There is no question about it, Tru Fam make a great team! “Sha” and “Just-I” have an undeniable chemistry that motivates them to push the envelope beyond what others thought they could do. They know what to expect from one another and what the other one may want on a record without saying a word. They are best friends and their toughest critics. So much so that they make one another perform the song that he has written to prove that the song is a hit and worthy of recording. Would you expect anything less from identical twins. Developing their own pop hip-hop sound, Tru Fam has reached beyond the normal beats and intricacies of pop music. They have a pot of stew if you will, that’s filled with passion, love, fun and excitement, topped with witty lyrics and catchy hooks. This interpretation of pop hip-hop with introspective beats has a commercial sound with great performances to back it up. Just like at the end of a play, they want the standing ovation and the applause from their fans. Tru Fam wants to reach the masses. They won’t record a song unless they can envision a great performance and deliver it and they do just that. Tru Fam wants their fans to feel, enjoy and vibe to their music. They see the bigger picture and pride themselves in going above and beyond to deliver their very best. It’s a complex art, building a brand but this is what they do. Tru Fam lives for their music and are excited to reach new heights and take on the world of Pop and Hip-Hop.”

Hanson Then Vs. Hanson Now

Here’s a solid throwback for all of us 90’s kids. Do you remember Hanson? If not, let me refresh your memory. Hanson is a boy band from Tulsa, Oklahoma and consists of none other than the Hanson brothers: Isaac, Taylor, and Zac. Their most famous song, “MMMBop,” was released in 1997. If you’re wondering what “MMMBop” even means, I really couldn’t tell you. What I do know is that the song was (and still is) ridiculously catchy. After watching a more recent performance of the song, I think it’s one of those tracks that gets better with age. Take a listen to both the 1997 version, and the 2012 version of “MMMBop” and decide for yourself which one you think is better. I think the haircuts are also a plus! The boys have definitely grown up well.

SNOWMiNE is a Brooklyn quintet formed out of a longtime friendship between bassist Jay Goodman, drummer Alex Beckmann, and lead singer/composer Grayson Sanders.

Sanders, the son of an opera singer and oil painter, discovered a voracious appetite for Classical and IDM music at an early age. A zealous disciple of Stravinsky, Ravel, Bartok, Ligeti and Autechre, he spent the better part of his adolescent life in a bedroom, hunched over manuscript paper or staring at a computer screen. By the time he was 22, he had written five full symphonic premiers, including a recent modern orchestral cover of Bjork’s “Cover Me.”

These classical influences can be found throughout their music, while also combining elements of classic afrobeat, electro-acoustic soundscapes and early 20th century orchestrations. Snowmine self-released and self-produced their debut LP, Laminate Pet Animal, in May 2011 to much critical acclaim and solidified their presence in the hearts of loyal fans across the country, playing grandiose performances with chamber orchestras, installation art gallery shows and just about anything in between.

The band has spent the summer hard at work recording their new LP to be released in early 2013. Recorded in Germano Studios in Manhattan and Doctor Wu’s in Brooklyn, the new record promises to build on the band’s distinguished, textual and rich sound.

White Panda Combines M83 And Kanye West? Say No More!

In all honesty, I had never heard of The White Panda before this week. I decided to check them out when SPA announced that they would be playing a show here at Penn State with Asher Roth. I hopped on Spotify and began listening to their albums and I instantly knew I had struck gold (Thank you SPA!). After the addition of several White Panda tracks to my party jams playlist, I can officially say that I am a fan. I mean, who doesn’t love a good mash-up, am I right or am I right?

“Midnight Life” has got to be my favorite White Panda song. The duo combined the New Wave, electronic pop song “Midnight City” by M83 (which was featured on one of Victoria’s Secret’s commercials last year), and Kanye West’s rhymes from “Good Life” to create this killer jam that’s absolutely genius if you ask me. For those of you who are still skeptical, just take a listen and enjoy the ride.

If you like what you hear, be sure to come out to the White Panda and Asher Roth show in the Hub’s Alumni Hall on December 7th at 10 PM. It’s free, and everyone loves free shit, so we hope to see you there!

Staff Pick – Music I’m Thankful For: Jack's Mannequin

When Andrew McMahon announced that Jack Mannequin’s show on November 11, 2012 would be the final show for the band, I think a little piece of me died. Formed in 2004, the band was a side project of Something Corporate’s frontman, Andrew McMahon. He decided to start writing his own songs and incorporate more personal and intimate thoughts into his music; music that was different than Something Corporate. Alas, this resulted in the formation of Jack’s Mannequin. In my eyes, the man could do no wrong so I downloaded Everything In Transit, Jack’s Mannequin’s first studio album. You could say it was love at first listen. Since the beginning you could feel his passion and emotion in every single word sung on each and every album.

I remember listening to every song on that CD and experiencing the full spectrum of emotions. “Holiday From Real” makes you wish you were lying on a beach in California basking in the sunshine without a care in the world (I wish) while “Rescued” is a painfully sad and pensive ballad which is handy if you ever need a good cry (seriously). I’m not going to go through every single song because I could go on for days, but I will add that I dubbed Andrew McMahon the master of piano melodies after listening to this album.

After finishing the Everything In Transit album, Andrew was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and was forced to cancel his tour and record promotions. This inspired more than a few of the songs on The Glass Passenger, Jack’s Mannequin’s second album which was released in 2008. The track entitled “Caves” opens with mesmerizing piano chords, but picks up half way through and tells of his struggle with cancer and his recovery. If I had to pick a song to represent courage, hope, perseverence and just never giving up, it would be “Swim”. Whenever I’m feeling down, angry, hurt, sad, depressed, this song never fails as a pick me up.

I won’t go over their latest and final album, People and Things, but I recommend listening to the tracks “Release Me” and “Platform Fire”.

As a final note, I will say that Jack’s Mannequin was possibly one of the greatest pop rock bands ever and I am extremely saddened over their decision to retire. However, I look forward to Andrew’s future endeavors as a musician as I’m sure they will be just as fantastic as Jack’s Mannequin.
